Welcome to UNAIDS Science now and to the third issue of HIV this month in 2016!
In March, UNAIDS and WHO organized a highlights from CROI 2016 briefing. A video of the briefing as well as presentation slides from speakers are available. Presentation webcasts and abstracts at the actual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) 2016 in February are also available online.
In this issue, we feature Use of a vaginal ring containing dapivirine for HIV-1 prevention in women (ASPIRE) by Beaten JM et al. published in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the two ring studies which results were released at CROI. Following these, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) had announced that it will fund further study of dapivirine vaginal ring for HIV prevention and invest in HIV Open-label Prevention Extension (HOPE) or MTN-025. This study will be conducted by the Microbicide Trials Network. A Q&A to help understand the ASPIRE study is available online.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis of HIV: A right way to go or a long way to go? by Wenya Yu et al. in Artificial Cells, Nanomedicine, and Biotechnology: An International Journal is an interesting review of antiretroviral drugs that have been/are being tested for PrEP use, and several considerations to facilitate an appropriate and effective PrEP delivery.
