Women's Leadership: Report of Launch of the Young Women's Leadership Initiative at the IAS

The GCWA supported a number of activities at the 6th International AIDS Society conference in Rome in July 2011. These included skills building and advocacy activities to strengthen the engagement of young women, including some living with HIV, in the HIV response, conducted in partnership with the Athena Network, Salamander Trust and WECARe+.  The report of these activities is now available. Geneva: In memory of Marcel van Soest

The Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Marcel van Soest, Executive Director of the World AIDS Campaign. Marcel's humility, kindness, commitment to social justice and meaningful involvement of those most affected by HIV, came through in all that he did. Committed and passionate, inclusive and determined, Marcel was able to take the World AIDS Campaign from a small organization working on World AIDS Day, to one with a broader mandate to work for human rights and gender equality of and with all communities in the HIV response.

Geneva: GFATM gender equality strategy consultation report

The GCWA, as part of its mission to support and empower girls and women living with and affected by HIV, undertook a virtual consultation, in partnership with the Foundation for Studies and Research on Women (FEIM) and the International AIDS Women Caucus (IAWC) to facilitate the engagement of women in all their diversity in the review of the Global Fund Gender Equality Strategy. The process involved 937 participants from 97 countries from around the world.

GCWA members survey: 2011 feedback / 2012 vision

In preparation for the annual GCWA Steering Committee face-to-face meeting, which takes place in November, the GCWA Secretariat is seeking members' feedback on their experience of being involved in the GCWA activities throughout this year, as well as their vision for the future of the GCWA. To this end, we have prepared a brief survey. It takes about 20 minutes to complete the survey. Comments will be anonymous, so please be as open as possible in your feedback. Vertical Transmission of HIV: Building women’s meaningful participation in the Global Plan for Elimination of HIV infection in Children and Keeping Mothers Alive

The Global Coalition on Women and AIDS is partnering with the AIDS Legal Network (ALN) to build women’s meaningful participation in the Global Plan for Elimination of HIV infection in Children and Keeping Mothers Alive. The virtual consultation will focus on the 22 priority countries identified in the Global Plan. As such, there will be particular emphasis placed on outreach within those countries, working in partnership with networks of women living with HIV and women’s rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights organizations.

GCWA: New Director of the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS

Kristan Schoultz is the new Director of the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS. The Global Coalition on Women and AIDS, initiated by UNAIDS in 2004, is a unique partnership of UN agencies, civil society groups and networks of women living with HIV who advocate for improved programming for women and girls. In joining the Coalition, Ms Schoultz will take the partnership forward to help ensure that AIDS strategies better address the needs of women and girls.
