Global / HIV Prevention: Global coalition of women call for HIV prevention revolution for women and girls

At the 6th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention in Rome, a global coalition of women representing international, national and local communities of people living with HIV/AIDS, HIV non-governmental organizations, and researchers identified recent developments as components of a potential HIV prevention revolution.

Investment in the health and the rights of girls and women can help economic recovery, civil society groups are telling G8 leaders. The big issues on the G8 agenda - food security, poverty, climate change and global health - are all connected to gender equality, they say. Many think investment in women is itself a solution. "If we invest in women, many problems will be solved," Sylvia Borren, co- chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) told IPS. Women have told their stories at hearings held by the gender task force at GCAP.

Global / HIV: ICW Global adopts June 27th as International Day of Peace Towards AIDS

JUNE 27: International Day of Peace Towards AIDS.  Why June 27th? We need one day to resemble the world, the necessity to work together to stop AIDS. Peace is a powerful tool to face human rights violations, domestic violence, stigma and discrimination in the society, at work, and in every bond weakened by violence. It is thus, for ICW Global, a chance to face Aids. On June 27th, 10 years ago, the United Nations Declaration on AIDS (UNGASS) was held in New York, stating that HIV/AIDS should be considered a global emergency that requires immediate action.

Thematic Panel Discussion at the High-level meeting on the comprehensive review of the progress achieved in realizing the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS This panel focused on the disproportionate burden of HIV on women and girls and the need to ensure that their specific needs and vulnerabilities are adequately addressed.

Global / Human Rights: GCWA Statement on the International Day against Homophobia and Trans phobia

On the 2011 International Day against Homophobia and Trans phobia, and on every day, the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS joins partners in denouncing stigma and discrimination rooted in homophobia. Such stigma and discrimination, often coupled with violence and hate crimes, are barriers to an effective AIDS response and violate human rights.

Worldwide / Global Fund: Virtual Consultation on Global Fund Gender Equality Strategy

A virtual consultation around the review of the GFATM Gender Equality Strategy The Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA), and the Foundation for Studies and Research on Women (FEIM), are pleased to announce that they will be working in partnership to develop a virtual consultation that will seek to document women's experiences around the implementation of the Global Fund's Gender Equality strategy. The consultation will be launched in early June and will be made available in six different languages in order to facilitate broad participation.

Global / GCWA: In Memory of Robert Carr

The Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. Robert Carr, who had recently assumed the position of co-chair of the GCWA. Robert’s kindness, wit and insight were an asset to anything he focused his energy on. Tireless and determined, as someone unafraid to mention the unmentionable or to ask the most challenging question, he was an invaluable advocate, visionary and human rights defender.
