Uganda: GCWA calls for Justice in Scapegoating of Ugandan Medical Professionals Living with HIV

On 19 May 2014, a 64 year-old nurse, Rosemary Namubiru, was convicted of criminal negligence and sentenced to three years in prison. She was initially accused of attempted murder.  Nurse Namiburu, who pleaded not guilty, was accused of giving a distraught two-year-old boy an injection after having accidentally pricked her finger, though the facts had not been established robustly.  The Ugandan healthcare system handled the case appropriately, by immediately treating the boy with post-exposure prophylaxis. So far, no sero-conversion could be established.

GCWA: Statement on the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) 2014

17 May marks the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT). On this day, and every day, the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) stands firmly against all forms of injustice and prejudice towards the LGBTI community. It is unacceptable that in 2014, stigma and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is widespread - propagated by homophobic laws in 78 countries. Criminalization and discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity is catastrophic in the context of HIV.

ICW Press Release: Uganda takes a giant leap backwards in the global struggle against HIV and AIDS

KAMPALA, Uganda— Today’s passage of the HIV Prevention and AIDS Control Bill  represents a dangerous backslide in Uganda’s efforts to respond to HIV.  While the bill may have been intended to facilitate and improve the HIV response in Uganda, the bill contains many poorly conceived and fear-induced provisions that have no place in a public health and human-rights-based response to HIV.  As passed, this bill will actually weaken Uganda’s HIV prevention efforts and will have a detrimental and disproportionate impact on the rights of women and girls and in particular women living w

ICW in Focus: Forced sterilization of women living with HIV must stop now.

“I was told I needed surgery on my uterus to get rid of cancer. It was during the post-surgical recovery when I learned that I had been sterilized”. These words are the testimony of a Namibian woman living with HIV, seeking justice today. Forced or coerced sterilization of women living with HIV refers to the sterilization without free, full and informed consent.

UNAIDS: Terms of Reference for the Dialogue-Platform on the Rights of women living with HIV 2014-2015

I. Background In December 2012, the UNAIDS Secretariat created a dialogue-platform to support effective and meaningful participation of women living with HIV in UNAIDS policy and programmatic dialogues, in particular related to social transformation. In addition, the platform was meant to enable UNAIDS to benefit from the guidance of women living with HIV in regards to key emerging issues faced by women living with HIV.

Nigeria: GCWA joins the call of Nigerian people to return abducted girls

The Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) and its membership wish to speak out against the recent kidnappings in Nigeria of over 300 girls, 12 to 17years of age, on the night of 14th April, and further condemn the abduction of eight more young women the night of 5 May, 2014. The majority of the victims are believed to have been abducted from their boarding school.

UNAIDS: Gender Assessment Tool: Towards a gender-transformative HIV response

The Tool is specifically designed to support the development or review of national strategic plans (NSP) and to inform submissions to both country investment cases and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM). To date, the Gender Assessment Tool has been implemented in over 20 countries.
