New research highlights needs of young people most at risk of HIV

The Population Council has released three new briefings as part of its role as research partner in the Dutch-funded Link Up project. Two of the briefs describe the findings from the baseline surveys of men who have sex with men in Myanmar, and women who sell sex in the brothels of Bangladesh. Impact of Exposure to Intimate Partner Violence on CD4+ and CD8+ T Cell Decay in HIV Infected Women: Longitudinal Study

This research article shows that in a sample of young ART-naive HIV positive women, gender-based violence exposure in the form of emotional abuse was associated with a faster rate of decline in markers of cellular immunity and progression of HIV disease. This study is one of the first to provide evidence of an impact of gender-based violence on cellular immunity in HIV positive women. It highlights the importance of attending to emotional abuse when studying the physiological impact of intimate partner violence experience and the mechanisms of its impact on women’s health.
